Deuteronomy 27
Big idea: The covenant is to be written where everyone can read it. Great stones coated with plaster, set up on Mount Ebal, with all the words of this law written on them very plainly — and an altar of uncut stones beside them, where Israel sacrifices peace offerings and rejoices. Then the ceremony: six tribes on Gerizim for the blessing, six on Ebal for the curse, and the Levites calling out twelve curses to which the whole nation answers Amen. What the twelve have in common is that almost all of them describe things done where nobody can see — an image set up in secret, a landmark quietly moved, a blind man misdirected, a bribe taken to kill. The people say Amen to the ones they could get away with.
Chapter 27 has the people say Amen to twelve curses. Chapter 28 unrolls both roads in full — first the blessings, then a curse that runs to sixty-eight verses.
27:1–10 — Written on the stones very plainly
Moses and the elders commanded the people: keep all the commandment which I command you today. On the day you pass over the Jordan into the land Yahweh your God gives you, set up great stones and coat them with plaster, and write on them all the words of this law when you have passed over, that you may go in to the land — a land flowing with milk and honey, as Yahweh the God of your fathers has promised. When you have crossed the Jordan, set up these stones on Mount Ebal and coat them with plaster. There build an altar to Yahweh your God, an altar of stones; you shall not use any iron tool on them. Build his altar of uncut stones, and offer burnt offerings on it. Sacrifice peace offerings and eat there, and rejoice before Yahweh your God. And write on the stones all the words of this law very plainly. Then Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel: be silent and listen, Israel! Today you have become the people of Yahweh your God. You shall therefore obey his voice and do his commandments and statutes, which I command you today.

27:11–26 — And all the people shall say, Amen
Moses commanded the people the same day: these shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people when you have crossed the Jordan — Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin. These shall stand on Mount Ebal for the curse — Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali. And with a loud voice the Levites shall say to all the men of Israel: Cursed is the man who makes an engraved or molten image and sets it up in secret. And all the people shall answer, Amen. Cursed is he who dishonors his father or mother. Amen. Who removes his neighbor's landmark. Amen. Who leads the blind astray on the road. Amen. Who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. Amen. Who lies with his father's wife; with any animal; with his sister; with his mother-in-law. Amen. Who secretly kills his neighbor. Amen. Who takes a bribe to kill an innocent person. Amen. Cursed is he who doesn't uphold the words of this law by doing them. And all the people shall say, Amen.
