Psalms 61
Big idea: A short prayer from a long way off. From the end of the earth I will call to you when my heart is overwhelmed — and then the request, which is one of the most quietly precise in the Psalter: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Not a rock he can climb to. One he needs to be led to, and one whose whole qualification is that it is above him. The psalm then widens to the king and ends on a vow paid daily rather than once.
Psalm 61 asks to be led to a rock. Psalm 62 says the rock is the only thing worth waiting for.
61:1–8 — The rock that is higher than I
Eight verses that move from the end of the earth to a tent. The opening is dislocated — he is calling from as far away as language allows, with an overwhelmed heart — and what he asks for is not to be brought home but to be led to a rock HIGHER THAN HE IS. The distinction matters: he is not asking for a refuge he could reach on his own. Then the psalm quietly turns into a prayer for the king.

Selah. 5 For you, God, have heard my vows. You have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. 6 You will prolong the king’s life. His years will be for generations. 7 He shall be enthroned in God’s presence forever. Appoint your loving kindness and truth, that they may preserve him. 8 So I will sing praise to your name forever, that I may fulfill my vows daily.
